The answer is here and it is “Yes”. New research showed that consuming 1 cup of blueberries daily can lower the risk of heart disease.
For this, the united states Highbush Blueberry council funded a study to investigate the health benefits of blueberries.
Researchers from the University of East Anglia(United Kingdom) teamed up with the scientist from Harvard University in Cambridge.
They wanted to understand that if regular eating of blueberries can change the profile of people with the syndrome.
Metabolic syndrome is described as a cluster of disease including high blood pressure, extra body fat around the waist, high sugar level, high cholesterol, and triglyceride levels.
All of these increase the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Currently, this disease affects more than one-third of adults in the United States. Some experts refer to it as a global epidemic.
Anthocyanins and Blueberries

She says “this can be because of some compounds in blueberries called anthocyanins.”
Anthocyanins are pigments which are soluble in water that can appear black, blue, purple, and red.
These are present in tissues – including the roots, leaves, stems, flowers, and fruits of many higher plants.
Prof. Aedin Cassidy says, “We wanted to find that if eating blueberries can help those people who have already been identified with the condition of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.”
For the investigation, researchers enlisted 115 participants, ages 50-75. All of them were overweight and had metabolic syndrome. The research ran for 6 months, making it the longest of its kind.
Researchers divided them into three groups:
- The 1st group consumed 150gm (1 cup) of dried and freeze powder of blueberries regularly.
- The 2nd group consumed 75gm (half cup) of dried and freeze powder of blueberries regularly.
- The 3rd group acted as a control group and the received the powder. It was similar to blueberry powder but contained dextrose, fructose, and maltodextrin.
At the start and end of the trial of the research, the researchers calculated the biomarkers for insulin resistance, vascular function, and lipid status. They published this in the American Journal of Clinical Nation.
“the research showed that consuming 1 cup of blueberries every day can result in continuous improvements in arterial stiffness and vascular function – by reducing the risk of heart disease by between 12% – 15%.” Said by Lead study author Dr. Peter Curtis.
Interestingly, the researchers only found the benefits in the 1st group consuming 1 cup (150gm) of berries every day.”
Health Benefits of blueberries
The research shows that blueberries are good for the heart because of the anthocyanins in blueberries.
The lower intestine digest anthocyanins to produce a range of chemicals like some of these chemicals give nourishment to gut bacteria “which play a key beneficial metabolic role.” Said by study author.
They quote some examples like some researchers have shown that syringic acid which is produced by metabolism of anthocyanin, gives benefits to vascular endothelial cells in the laboratory.
“In simple words, you should eat 1 cup (150gm) of blueberries to improve the health of the heart.”
Blueberries are surely worth addition to any diet, however, researchers will need to do more research to confirm the health benefits of blueberries.
